By creating an account or using Rootsgen you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy, and you confirm that you are at least 16 years old. Questions? Email us at admin@rootsgen.net.

Your data is your responsibility

• Rootsgen is a place to work on and share your tree. It is not a backup service. Keep your own copies: the app gives you Backup tree (.db) and Export GEDCOM/media, so please use them, especially before big changes.
• We may make our own backups, but we do not promise them, or that data will never be lost. Do not rely on us as your only copy.

You decide who sees your tree

• Every tree is private. Only you and the people you invite can open it, and you choose whether each person can view, edit or co-own it. You are responsible for who you invite and for what they do.
• A tree may include information about living people. You are responsible for having the right to add what you add, and for deciding whether to mask living people when you export a tree (the export screen offers it).

Your account

• Rootsgen does not ask for an email address. Your account is protected by a passkey held on your own device and a recovery code - keep your recovery code safe, and tell us if you believe someone else has gained access to your account.
• Please do not try to get into other people's accounts or trees, overload the service, copy it automatically, or use it for anything unlawful or harmful.

Leaving

• You can delete any tree you own, or your whole account, at any time (Tree options and Preferences). Deleting is permanent. If you own a tree and delete your account, a co-owner takes over as owner if there is one; otherwise the tree is deleted.
• A tree left unopened for a long time may be disabled after an email warning, and eventually removed. Keep a backup.
• We may close an account or remove content if these terms are broken or the law requires it. Where we can, we will tell you first so you can export your data.

No guarantees

You use Rootsgen by your own choice. It is provided "as is" and "as available", with no warranty of any kind, and we may change or stop it (with notice where we can, and you can export your data first). To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost data.

Everything else

You keep ownership of what you add, and you let us store and process it only to run the service for you and the people you invite. Only add what you have the right to add. We may update these terms; a material change will be posted here with a new effective date. California law governs these terms, and disputes go to the courts in Los Angeles County, California, though we would always rather sort things out first - email admin@rootsgen.net.
